The University of Illinois Police and Champaign Police
Department are asking for community assistance involving a
recent rash of burglaries to motor vehicles.
Through January 01, 2008 to April 16, 2008, the Champaign Police
Department has received forty reports of burglaries to motor
vehicles in the campus area. Twenty-four of these incidents were
reported during April. These burglaries have involved vehicles
in parking garages. Valuable items (i.e. MP3 players and GPS
units) that have been left inside the vehicle in plain view have
been the primary targets of loss. Suspects have walked through
parking garages until they find an item of value within a parked
vehicle. They will then smash a side window of the vehicle and
remove the item(s).
University of Illinois Police have had twelve reports in the
same time period in University Parking Lots. These incidents are
most frequent in the large parking compounds - Lots E14 (First
Street and Kirby Avenue) and F23 (Florida Avenue and Lincoln
Avenue).
Police are asking for the community to assist by reducing the
opportunities for criminal activity and reporting suspicious
behavior. Not leaving items of value in your vehicle (or at
least not in plain view) will remove the opportunity for these
suspects to locate easy targets. Report any suspicious activity
to METCAD by dialing 9-1-1 (or 9-9-1-1 from a University of
Illinois phone). Suspicious activity can include subjects
wandering/lurking through parking garages and parking lots,
looking inside parked vehicles, etc.
Any information regarding suspects of these or other crimes can
be shared with the Champaign Police Department (217-351-4545) or
the University of Illinois Police Department (217-333-1216).
Information can also be reported anonymously to Champaign County
CrimeStoppers at 217-373-TIPS or via the web at

of the Illini Union who appeared to be hiding in the shadows. The

Hall. The victim struggled with the suspect, whom she described as a
black man, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a large build, wearing a
black baseball cap (possibly with a New York Yankees logo), zippered
black jacket with a white lining, and light blue baggy jeans. During the
struggle, the suspect forcibly took the victim to the east side of Noyes
