Certificates of Insurance

Any entity that does business with the University of Illinois is required to have adequate and proper insurance coverage. This requirement includes minimum policy limit amounts and prescribed financial and stability parameters for the insurance carriers providing the policies. These provisions are in place to ensure that the University does not become financially responsible for any liability created by vendors and others with whom we do business. A list of pre-approved vendors can be found on our website on the Current Valid Certificates page.

Some vendors have minimal assets immediately available to finance an unexpected liability claim. Insurance is the most common means to ensure that money will be available to pay a claim. In the absence of proper insurance, it is possible that the cost of a claim for which a vendor is responsible might be unduly shifted to the University.

The minimum requirements for insurance coverage include:
  • Each insurance carrier must have an A.M. Best rating of B+ or better, and a financial rating of VI or better for these coverages:
    • Commercial General Liability
    • Auto Liability
    • Employer's Liability
    • Surety/Bonding Coverage, when required
You may check the rating of any licensed carrier on the following web site: www.ambest.com.

  • The minimum coverage amounts for specific policies are:
    • $1,000,000 Commercial General Liability
    • $1,000,000 Auto Liability
    • $1,000,000 Liquor Liability (if liquor is to be served)
    • $500,000 Employer's Liability
    • Statutory limits for Worker's Compensation
Evidence of proper Excess Liability coverage in proper amounts may serve to meet some of these requirements.

  • Each general liability policy must include the following: "The University of Illinois Board of Trustees is named as an Additional Insured." Any additional wording related to coverage limitations may result in delayed approval or rejection of the coverage.

  • 30 days notice of cancellation must be provided to the University for all policies.

  • Vendor agrees to maintain the indicated insurance for the duration of work with the University, unless the Campus Risk Manager is notified otherwise.
In addition to the requirements stated above, those catering food must provide the following.
  • A copy of your food service/catering permit from the Champaign/Urbana Public Health District, or your local public health authority.

For those who wish to be able to provide for the service of alcohol on campus property, or for any campus-related event, the following additional documentation is required.

  • Certificate of insurance showing liquor liability coverage with a limit of at least one million dollars; the company issuing this policy must have an A.M. Best rating of B+, V or better.
  • Valid liquor license issued from the entity where you are based; this license must allow for the services that you will be providing to our campus community.
  • Proof that all individuals serving alcohol have received current TIPS training.

The information above details minimum requirements. Additional requirements may be imposed by the Campus Risk Manager dependent upon a number of variables, including, but not limited to, the following: extent of exposure, previous history, and nature of exposure. The University also reserves the right to modify any insurance requirement at its discretion.

Each certificate sent to the Campus Risk Manager must include a completed routing form. You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the form.
