DESCRIPTION OF ITEMS ON THE CLERY ACT
REPORTING CHARTS, 2004-2006
The following descriptions
apply to the Clery Act Reporting Charts.
1. For purposes of reporting statistics, University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign must distinguish criminal offenses according
to where they occur, as categorized in the chart.
Geographic Locations are defined as follows:
• Campus: (1) Any building or property owned or controlled by an
institution within the same reasonably contiguous geographic
area and used by the institution in direct support of, or in a
manner related to, the institution’s educational purposes,
including residence halls; and (2) Any building or property that
is within or reasonably contiguous to the area identified in
paragraph (1), that is owned by the institution but controlled
by another person, is frequently used by students, and supports
institutional purposes (such as food or retail vendor).
• Non-Campus Building or Property: (1) Any building or property
owned or controlled by a student organization that is officially
recognized by the institution; or (2) Any building or property
owned or controlled by an institution that is used in direct
support of, or in relation to, the institution’s educational
purposes, is frequently used by students, and is not within the
same reasonably contiguous geographic area of the institution.
• Public Property: All public property, including thoroughfares,
streets, sidewalks, and parking facilities, that is within the
campus, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the
campus.
2. Hate Crimes are crimes that manifest evidence that the victim
was intentionally selected because of the victim’s actual or
perceived Race (ra), Religion (re), Sexual Orientation (so),
Gender (g), Ethnicity (e), or Disability (d). Reportable Crimes
which are reported as Hate Crimes in the above chart are coded
in the Hate Crime column. (Ex: 1ra in the Aggravated Assault row
under the Hate Crimes column means one (1) case of Aggravated
Assault which was a Hate Crime based on race in that calendar
year.)
3. Persons not arrested for liquor law violations, drug law
violations, or illegal weapons possession, but who were referred
for campus disciplinary action. A referral for campus
disciplinary action for violation of University policies
regarding alcohol, drugs, or weapons does not necessarily mean
that a violation of law has occurred. Referrals that were the
result of arrest or citation are reflected elsewhere in the
chart. Data is reported by the number of individuals referred
for campus disciplinary action, and is from the Office for
Student Conflict Resolution and University Housing reports.
*In prior years, this number reflected only the number of
alcohol incidents. It now reflects the number of all student
referrals, accounting for the significant increase in reports.
**In prior years, this number reflected both deadly and
non-deadly weapons possession. It now reflects only referrals
for deadly weapons possession.
