USE OF IN-LINE SKATES, ROLLERSKATES

It is the University’s position to allow use of in-line skates, roller-skates, skateboards and similar devices for transportation on campus in accordance with the guidelines cited below. Regulation of these devices is deemed necessary to reduce risk of injury, and use that causes damage to University property.

Use of bicycles, skates, skateboards and other manually propelled wheeled vehicles on campus is generally permitted. However, skating is strictly prohibited in the following areas:

  1. In all University buildings (skates should be removed prior to or immediately upon entry);
  2. In all multi-level/interior parking structures; and
  3. In any other areas posted as such by the University.

Skating, bicycling, and riding of the noted vehicles is also prohibited if it is performed in a manner that indicates a disregard for the safety of others and/or damages property.

Recreational use of bicycles, skates, skateboards and other manually propelled wheeled vehicles by groups and/or individuals (i.e. skill demonstrations, sports/competitions, stunts, tricks and uses other than transportation) is prohibited from buildings, building entrances, steps, stairs, ramps, walls, sidewalks, parking lots and other general campus space with these exceptions:

  1. When formally scheduled and approved by the appropriate campus unit(s); and
  2. When proper arrangements have been made to use the Division of Campus Recreation (333-3510) skating facility located at Stadium Terrace Fields.

Failure to comply with this policy and/or other applicable University guidelines and traffic laws may result in any or all of the following:

  1. Referral to the student disciplinary system; and/or
  2. Illinois Vehicle Code citations; and/or
  3. Arrest for any applicable criminal offense(s).

Manually propelled and power wheelchairs are exempt from this policy.

For their safety, and the safety of others, skaters, cyclists, and other riders should follow all applicable University regulations and local and state traffic laws. These individuals are encouraged to wear proper safety equipment at all times.

Questions about this policy may be directed to the Office of Campus Risk Management at 333-4660.
