The purpose of the Faculty/Staff Firearms Safety Program is to promote responsible and safe ownership of firearms through appropriate training and supervised practices.
The safety program addresses the following issues:
- Weapons ownership and responsibilities: Your instructor will review some of the legal issues of weapons ownership and use in Illinois.
- Safe storage: Your instructor will review various methods for safely storing and securing weapons. Parents must be especially careful to understand their responsibilities for safe storage.
- Handling safety: Your instructor will explain the common types of weapons (pistols, revolvers and long guns), their action and mechanical safety devices. The most important safety device is you. Your instructor will cover what you need to know to use guns safely and effectively.
- Supervised practices: Using a gun is a little like driving a car: you cannot expect to do either safely without training and practice. Both driving and shooting are especially difficult under stress. There is no substitute for appropriate training and regular practice. The FSFSP program provides opportunities for monthly time on a shooting range, supervised by an experienced police range officer who is assisted by range safety monitors.
- Anyone can attend the Firearms Safety Orientation at no charge. However, to participate in the monthly training program on the firing range you must attend the Orientation, possess a current Faculty-Staff identification card or spouse's staff ID, have a valid Illinois Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID), and pay the dues (currently $30 annually).
